In the lap of the western ghats of India, Palghar district is unarguably one of the most difficult terrains in India in terms of accessing water during summer which is gradually worsening because of climate change and deforestation.
The scope of Fairpicture photographer Avijit Ghosh's assignment was to document how the donation from Grundfos Foundation, its partner NGO’s – Department Of Water Supply and Sanitation (DWSS) – has made water accessibility easy and how it’s changing people’s lives.

Jawhar, Mokhada, Vikramgad region yearly receives a rainfall amounting to nearly 2458mm throughout the year mostly during the monsoon but in summers all water sources get dry. When women go to collect water from dug wells, they have to climb kilometres of path, sometimes at an elevation difference of about 150ft -200ft to collect the water and return home holding two to three pitchers.
Krishna Chandar Bagul, 30 and Dinesh Pandu Pawar, 26 are the two local technicians who take care of the installation of the pump and water filter and their maintenance. Installed solar power pump in the water source pump the water into an overhead tank and then supply it to standpost and filter. The entire process requires routine maintenance for smooth running. These two technicians ensure that.
Pranali Mithun Gavita wanted to pursue her education but she could not make it after class 11th due to circumstances. When she got married in Moulipada she had a dream to educate her child. But when she had a girl, at the beginning she could not take care of her education because all the time faded away in collecting water. However, after the DWSS project, she can access water at her doorstep and use all her free time to fulfilling her daughter’s dream.
Lata Noush Pardhi stands in front of her class. Before the DWSS project, she had to walk out of the village and had to go near the river for water collection. She couldn’t invest her time in other household work. Now with the installation of the pump and water filter, she can access water near her house which saves a lot of time for her. She can now teach in an rural childcare centre which helps her to sustain her family economically.
