Fairpicture photographer Mutunga Al-Amin visited the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi and Muranga District Hospital in Muranga, Kenya, on behalf of the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation. There, he met 29-year-old Moses Muthii Muriuki and his 11-year-old brother, Reuben Ngori Muriuki, among others. Both were diagnosed with haemophilia type A.
Haemophilia is a mostly inherited bleeding disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot properly. If the person doesn’t receive adequate care and treatment, bleedings into muscles and joints can lead to extreme pain, damages of the affected joints and in some cases to death.
The Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation are supporting a project aiming to accelerate access to blood disorders care in both Kenya and Tanzania, by establishing 16 centres to provide basic care, diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders in both countries.
